After more than a decade, Porsche is set to stop making the gasoline-powered Macan. The final units of this first-generation compact SUV will come off the line by the end of July. Porsche’s move reflects a shift towards electric models, although demand for the combustion engine Macan remains strong, especially in the United States.
End of an Era for the Original Macan
The Porsche Macan has been in production since early 2014. Known for blending sports car performance with SUV practicality, the petrol-powered Macan helped build Porsche’s success in the compact SUV segment. However, the model has faced stricter regulations, especially in Europe where it was discontinued earlier due to failing new cybersecurity requirements. Now, the production is ending globally.
Electric Macan Sales and Market Response
Porsche initially believed customers would move quickly to the new electric Macan. While the EV version outsold the gasoline Macan in 2025, sales in the first half of 2026 show a different trend:
- Out of 35,315 Macans sold in H1 2026, 19,695 were gas-powered
- Electric Macan sales stood at 15,620 during the same period
This shift suggests that demand for combustion engines remains strong. Porsche has been building inventory to meet U.S. demand and expects this stock to last into 2027.
Future Plans for a Gas and Hybrid Compact Crossover
Porsche will not immediately replace the gasoline Macan. A new compact crossover with combustion engines and hybrids is planned, likely launching around 2028. This model will carry a different name since Porsche plans to reserve the Macan nameplate exclusively for electric vehicles.
The new crossover will share platforms and technology with the Audi Q5 but will feature unique Porsche design and engineering:
- Offers new technology and product features
- Designed to maintain Porsche’s sports SUV identity
Why This Matters
The end of the gas-powered Macan marks a key step in Porsche’s transition to electric vehicles. However, the company acknowledges that combustion engines still have a place in their lineup for now. The upcoming new crossover will aim to blend Porsche’s performance DNA with cleaner and hybrid technologies. Fans of the original Macan will have to wait until later this decade for a true combustion successor, while electric Macans will define Porsche’s future SUVs.
