Peugeot has begun testing a prototype of the third-generation 208 electric model set to arrive in 2027. Spy photos show the new E-208 with heavy camouflage but reveal notable updates, including a controversial new steering wheel and confirmation of updated battery technology.
New Design and Interior Features Visible on Prototype
The latest prototype maintains the recognizable 208 shape but features revisions aligned with Peugeot’s updated design language, similar to the current 308. Changes include a redesigned grille, front and rear bumpers, and new headlight shapes, moving away from the current model’s LED daytime running lights.
Inside, the prototype sports a small, mostly rectangular steering wheel inspired by the Peugeot Polygon concept car. This unique wheel design appeared on earlier mule models and signals Peugeot’s plan to carry it into production, although it is unclear if a more traditional wheel variant will also be available.

Battery Chemistry and Range Improvements
Peugeot’s next 208 electric will offer a range of battery options using both LFP (lithium iron phosphate) and NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) chemistries. Reportedly, battery sizes will stretch from around 37 kWh up to 82 kWh.
The largest battery is expected to deliver over 500 kilometres of range based on the WLTP standard, significantly improving on today’s model. This dual chemistry strategy aims to balance cost and range for different customers.

Launch Plans and Production Location
The new E-208 is scheduled for a summer 2027 launch across Europe. Peugeot may reveal the car before then, possibly at the Paris Motor Show in 2026, although no official date has been announced.
Production will continue at Stellantis’ Figueruelas plant near Zaragoza, Spain, where Peugeot currently assembles the 208 along with the Opel Corsa and Lancia Ypsilon. Meanwhile, Peugeot plans a minor refresh for the gasoline-powered 208 to keep it available alongside the all-electric version for a few more years.
With its updated design, new interior elements, advanced battery options, and confirmed European production, the Peugeot 208 electric looks set to keep its spot as one of Europe’s top-selling small cars through its next generation.
