Lincoln is preparing to enter the electric vehicle market with a new small SUV built on the same platform as the upcoming Ford Fathom electric pickup. This move could make it Lincoln’s most affordable model yet, marking a significant step for the brand as it catches up to the EV trend.
New Lincoln EV to Share Architecture with Ford Fathom
Lincoln has been slow to bring electric vehicles to market, with no fully electric models currently available and limited hybrid options after discontinuing the Corsair Grand Touring. However, the brand will soon use the Universal Electric Vehicle architecture developed by Ford’s advanced projects team. This is the same platform that will underpin the Ford Fathom, a highly anticipated electric midsize pickup set to launch in 2027.
The Lincoln SUV will be built at Ford’s Louisville Assembly plant in Kentucky, a facility undergoing a $2 billion upgrade to produce electric vehicles. This shared platform strategy could help Lincoln offer an EV at a lower cost by leveraging parts and production with the Fathom pickup.
Production Plans and Market Positioning
Earlier plans to build a large Lincoln electric SUV at Ford’s Oakville Assembly plant in Canada were scrapped due to concerns about battery costs and shifting market demand. The Oakville plant shifted its focus to heavier-duty gas and diesel trucks instead.
With Louisville set to produce the Ford Fathom, Lincoln’s new electric SUV is expected to be positioned as an affordable luxury EV. Ford’s Fathom is expected to start around $29,945 in the U.S., while Lincoln’s current entry-level model, the Nautilus, begins near $53,995. This suggests the new Lincoln EV will close the gap, offering a more accessible price point for the brand.
Lincoln’s Future SUV Lineup
Besides this small electric SUV, Lincoln is also developing a Bronco-based SUV aimed at combining luxury with off-road capability. This model will complement a refreshed Navigator and Aviator lineup, broadening Lincoln’s luxury SUV offerings.
While details like battery size, motor output, and exact launch dates remain unconfirmed, these developments show Lincoln’s push to finally establish itself in the electric vehicle segment.
