Honda has announced its new hybrid powertrain called the Honda Hybrid, set to debut globally in 2027. This new system aims to improve fuel efficiency and driving feel across key markets in North America, Japan, and India with around 15 models adopting it by early 2030.
Next-Generation Hybrid Builds on Existing e:HEV Technology
The Honda Hybrid system evolves directly from the current e:HEV setup introduced in 2019. It keeps the same two-motor layout but features a smaller drive unit and an engine tuned to operate efficiently over a wider range of conditions. By simplifying its hybrid lineup under one name, Honda replaces past branding that included Integrated Motor Assist and several Sport Hybrid variants.

New Platform Focuses on Weight and Rigidity
Vehicles equipped with the Honda Hybrid system will ride on a new platform designed to be lighter and stiffer than previous versions. Honda says this improves ride comfort and handling without needing a completely new suspension design. The increased rigidity helps maintain stable behavior, especially at higher speeds, while balancing weight savings and structural strength.

Electric All-Wheel Drive and Motion Management System
A key addition to the Honda Hybrid range is a newly developed electric all-wheel-drive (e-AWD) system offered alongside traditional front-wheel-drive layouts. The details of the e-AWD motors, their power output, and how torque is distributed remain undisclosed. This system works together with Honda’s Motion Management System, an integrated vehicle control technology designed to enhance driving dynamics.

Previewed on Next-Gen Civic Hybrid Prototype
Honda has shown some of these advancements on a next-generation Civic Hybrid prototype featuring a new 2.0-litre petrol engine paired with two electric motors. This prototype serves as a preview for future hybrid-equipped sedans and SUVs using the updated technology.
The Honda Hybrid rollout aligns with the company’s recent focus on expanding hybrid models as part of its strategy to strengthen its core vehicle lineup. With preparations already underway, more detailed information will likely emerge as the 2027 launch approaches.
