Fiat has been quietly testing a fresh setup inside a completely uncamouflaged 500e. Unlike typical secret prototypes, this white electric city car showed no exterior changes but revealed an intriguing gadget inside the cabin.
More Than Just a Standard 500e
Usually, prototypes wear heavy camouflage or sport hidden design tweaks to keep updates under wraps. But this 500e looked virtually identical to the production model you’d see on the street. The only hint that something was different was a visible electronic diagnostic tool mounted inside the front cabin.
Industry experts believe Fiat could be working on new advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) or new software improvements. However, Fiat has not confirmed what the device or testing actually involves. It’s also possible the team is diagnosing software irregularities like infotainment glitches, but given the presence of other Stellantis models running alongside in validation runs, an upgrade seems likely.
Fiat 500e’s Rollercoaster Journey
The current Fiat 500e first launched in 2020 as a fully electric city car, dropping combustion engines entirely for this generation. It has been built at the Mirafiori factory in Turin and quickly became a best-seller in Europe. By 2023, Fiat sold almost 65,000 units, earning the 500e the title of Europe’s top-selling electric city car for two years in a row.
Even during the first nine months of 2024, the 500e held a commanding 45 percent market share in its segment in key European markets like Italy, France, Germany, and the UK. However, the overall EV market cooled off, forcing Fiat to rethink its strategy. The company opted to start developing a hybrid version to balance production and keep the Mirafiori line active.
Electric Future Still Alive for the 500e
These latest tests suggest Fiat is continuing to invest in the pure electric 500e. Whether the focus is on new safety technology, battery improvements, or software enhancements is unclear. What is certain is the 500e remains a key part of Stellantis’ city electric car offer, even amid shifting market demands and product diversification.
