Ferrari is reportedly developing a convertible variant of its F80 hypercar, spotted recently testing near the company’s Maranello base. While the F80 coupe only began deliveries at the end of 2025 with 799 units planned, this new heavily camouflaged prototype hints at what could be a rare open-top model, possibly called the F80 Spider or F80 Aperta.
Visible Changes Suggest a Lightweight Soft-Top
The prototype’s main visible difference from the coupe is its roof design. Instead of a fixed or retractable hardtop, the car appears to have a removable fabric roof, likely chosen to keep weight down in this high-performance vehicle. Other design elements like the front end, active rear wing, and central exhaust mirror those of the original F80, indicating minimal changes beyond the roof.
Following Ferrari’s Tradition of Limited-Edition Convertibles
This potential F80 Spider would continue Ferrari’s pattern of offering rare open variants alongside their flagship supercars. Historically, models like the 288 GTO, F40, and Enzo never had convertible versions. The F50 featured a removable hardtop with a soft roof but was not developed as a true Spider. Ferrari revived this tradition more explicitly with the LaFerrari Aperta, which had a limited production run of 209 units compared to 499 coupes and is now highly sought after.
Powertrain Expected to Remain Unchanged
Reports suggest the F80 Spider will retain the coupe’s hybrid powertrain. This setup features a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 combined with an electric front axle and F1-derived MGU-K system, delivering around 1,200 horsepower. If confirmed, it would make the convertible one of Ferrari’s most powerful open-top cars ever.
Limited Production Anticipated
Ferrari has not confirmed production details, but following the LaFerrari Aperta’s precedent, the F80 Spider would likely be a very exclusive model. With 799 coupes planned, an estimated run of around 300 Spider units would keep it rare and highly desirable.
