BMW Prepares 2027 3 Series for September Launch with Final Testing Underway

BMW is nearing the debut of the eighth-generation 3 Series, set to arrive on September 30, 2026. The new model enters its final validation stage ahead of production starting in November.

New Design and Shared Style with the Electric i3

The 2027 3 Series showcases BMW’s fresh “Neue Klasse” design language, which it shares with the recently launched electric i3. While both models appear quite similar, key differences remain. The 3 Series has a longer, flatter hood to house combustion engines, including six-cylinder options, while the i3’s front profile and door designs differ.

Inside, both cars feature a large panoramic display set low on the windshield and a 17.9-inch touchscreen at the center console. However, the 3 Series retains a traditional transmission tunnel that reduces rear legroom, unlike the i3’s flat floor typical of electric vehicles.

Powertrain Options Confirmed for Launch

BMW plans to offer three mild hybrid petrol engines with 48-volt systems when production begins. The range starts with a 160 hp 318, moves up to a 205 hp 320, and tops out with the sporty M350 xDrive at 419 hp, which replaces the previous M340 model. All versions come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and only the M350 has all-wheel drive.

A plug-in hybrid model is expected to join the lineup around mid-2027. At this point, diesel variants have not been mentioned, and the long electric range of the i3 (over 900 km under WLTP) could reduce the need for diesel options.

Final Testing and Production Details

Spy photos show a prototype undergoing the last round of testing, including in-car system checks with both driver and passenger engaged. For the first time during development, the prototype’s front seats are visible, revealing that the “digital white” upholstery option from the i3 will also be available in the new 3 Series.

Standard wheel sizes will be 18 inches across most trims, with the M350 xDrive featuring 19-inch alloy wheels. Production is scheduled to start in November 2026, with deliveries expected to begin around March 2027.

This update marks a new chapter for the 3 Series, extending its 51-year history with a fresh design and the introduction of electrification into the range.
