BYD Unveils Updated Han Sedan in China with Over 700 HP and 270 km/h Top Speed

Chinese automaker BYD has refreshed its executive sedan, the Han, for the 2026 model year with significant size increases and powerful new electric options. The updated Han features three fully electric versions plus a plug-in hybrid, boasting impressive performance figures for a luxury sedan.

Larger Dimensions and Improved Rear Space

The new BYD Han has grown considerably compared to the previous model. It is now 5,156 mm long, 1,969 mm wide, and ranges from 1,492 to 1,507 mm in height depending on whether it includes the optional LiDAR system. Its wheelbase is extended to 3,030 mm, which is 90 mm longer than before. This increase benefits rear-seat space, an important factor for Chinese buyers.

For context, the 2026 Han sits between BYD’s Han L and Da Han models in size. It is slightly longer than the Audi A8, which measures around 5,190 mm, positioning BYD’s flagship sedan firmly in the luxury segment.

Range of Powertrains Including a Strong Performance EV

The 2026 Han continues to offer a plug-in hybrid option pairing a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with a 200 kW electric motor. This setup delivers roughly 268 horsepower and a claimed top speed of 200 km/h.

Fully electric versions start with a rear-wheel-drive model producing 245 kW (329 hp) and weighing about 2,005 kg. A mid-level electric variant boosts power to 300 kW (402 hp). Both of these EV trims have a top speed limited to 240 km/h.

The flagship electric Han stands out with a dual-motor setup: a 320 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor powering the rear axle, supported by a 200 kW asynchronous motor at the front. Together they generate 520 kW (707 hp) and can reach speeds up to 270 km/h. This makes the Han one of the fastest electric luxury sedans currently available. Weight in this range rises to approximately 2,351 kg.

Updated Design with Familiar Styling

Despite these changes, the 2026 Han keeps the design language of its predecessor. Spy shots from recent road tests in China show the prototype still covered in some camouflage. It is expected to launch in the Chinese market soon, although no official date has been announced yet.

BYD’s Blade battery technology continues to power the electric variants, developed by its subsidiary FinDreams Battery. The Han range also features Bosch’s integrated braking system and a standard event data recorder across all models.

What’s Next for the BYD Han?

The updated Han’s arrival in China could mark the beginning of a gradual rollout to other markets. The original Han model was launched in Europe, including Spain, earlier in 2023 with pricing starting at around €69,990. It remains unclear if the 2026 version will reach Europe soon or carry over similar pricing.

With stronger performance and a spacious interior, the new BYD Han aims to compete with established luxury sedans like the Audi A8, especially in its more powerful electric forms.
