New spy photos reveal that Mercedes is working on a hybrid version of its VLE large MPV, expanding its lineup beyond the electric model already available. The hybrid is expected to share its powertrain with the CLA and GLA compact models and could arrive in 2027.
Spy Photos Show Clear Hybrid Indicators
The latest development prototypes of the Mercedes VLE provide clear signs of a hybrid powertrain. Unlike the pure electric variant, the front grille on the hybrid prototype is fully open, exposing a radiator needed to cool a combustion engine. On the rear left side, there is a fuel filler cap, while the charging port sits on the right side, similar to the CLA hybrid’s layout.
The most telling detail is the visible exhaust pipe hidden behind the rear bumper, confirming the presence of an internal combustion engine in this version. The body styling remains identical to the electric VLE, keeping the sash-shaped side windows, integrated door handles, sharp LED headlights, and vertical rear lights.

Shared Powertrain with CLA and GLA
The hybrid VLE will likely use Mercedes’ 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor integrated into the automatic transmission. This setup can produce up to 190 horsepower and offers all-wheel-drive via the 4MATIC system in its top version.
The VLE rides on the VAN.EA platform, designed especially for large vans, while the CLA and GLA are built on the MMA architecture. Sharing the same hybrid setup with these smaller models allows Mercedes to offer an electrified option alongside the fully electric VLE for customers not ready to switch to battery-only vehicles.

Launch Timeline and Market Position
Mercedes has not officially announced the hybrid VLE, but the development stage suggests a launch in the first half of 2027, with deliveries possibly starting later that year. The hybrid option aims to serve customers who routinely cover long distances and are concerned about electric range and charging times, especially in the large MPV segment.
Details such as whether the hybrid will be available with eight seats, come in both vehicle lengths (5.30 and 5.48 meters), or how its pricing will compare to the electric VLE remain unconfirmed. The hybrid’s arrival will add more choice to the VLE range, balancing between the long-range electric model and a combustion-assisted alternative.
