Volvo has outlined a major product expansion, targeting the launch of 13 new vehicles worldwide by 2030. Among these, the company plans to introduce both “low and high body types,” which may signal a return to station wagons in its lineup.
New Body Styles Suggested by Product Plans
While Volvo has recently updated several SUVs, including the XC40, XC60, and XC90, the company’s latest announcement points to a broader vehicle range beyond SUVs. According to the automaker, seven of the new models will be for Western markets and will be based on the SPA2 and SPA3 platforms, which currently underpin models like the Volvo EX90 and Polestar 3.
The mention of “low & high body types” in Volvo’s official materials hints that the “low” category might include station wagons or sedans. This aligns with earlier reports suggesting Volvo is developing new electric sedan and wagon models likely called ES60 and EV60, expected to debut in the U.S. by 2028. These new models reportedly will be built on the SPA3 platform with starting prices around the low $50,000 range.
Electric Expansion and Market Focus
Volvo is emphasizing electric powertrains and third-generation hybrids for its expanded lineup. The automaker plans six new models for the Chinese market and seven new models for Western countries. In addition to the sedan and wagon, there are reports of a compact electric SUV, the EX50, expected to replace the EX40 in 2027.
The move to add new segments and body styles indicates Volvo is diversifying beyond SUVs, tapping into segments it has historically been known for—particularly wagons. The brand’s station wagon heritage includes iconic models like the 240 from the 1970s-80s and the sporty 850 T-5R in the 1990s. Despite declining wagon sales with the rise of SUVs, Volvo seems poised to revive the segment with modern electric variants.
With the current V60 and V90 wagons set to end U.S. sales after 2026, fans of Volvo’s wagons may soon see new electric replacements as part of this product offensive.
