The eighth-generation Hyundai Elantra is preparing to make its return to Europe as part of a wider global launch. Known as the Avante in South Korea, the new model has just started strong sales at home before being seen testing on European roads.
Record Sales in South Korea Boost Launch Plans
The latest Avante, released about six weeks ago in South Korea, quickly exceeded expectations by securing over 11,000 orders on its first day. This marks a significant milestone for Hyundai and proves that sedans still hold appeal in some markets, despite the growing preference for SUVs in Europe.
Seeing the Avante’s success at home, Hyundai is gearing up to expand the Elantra’s presence across global markets, including Europe, where the sedan has been absent for years.
Prototype Testing Reveals Key Design Features
Spy photos from Europe show a camouflaged Elantra prototype undergoing crucial summer testing. The images reveal design elements very similar to the South Korean Avante. Notable features like the headlights, bumpers, and grille shape are visible beneath the covering, suggesting the production model in Europe will closely follow the Avante’s styling.
Powertrain Options and Performance Variants
The new Elantra will be offered with both traditional gasoline and hybrid setups. The non-hybrid model is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 149 horsepower. Meanwhile, the hybrid version pairs a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver a combined output of 157 horsepower. Both use automatic transmissions.
Hyundai is also developing a sportier Elantra N variant. Early test mules have been spotted, and reports suggest it will feature a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine producing around 300 horsepower, aiming to rival other performance sedans.
Launch Timeline
While the Avante is already on sale in South Korea, European customers will need to wait until the first half of 2027 for the Elantra’s arrival. The current testing phase indicates Hyundai is finalizing preparations before launching this sedan back into markets where sedans have largely declined but may now find renewed interest.
