Hyundai is skipping the usual facelift for the KONA and moving straight to a new generation set to debut in 2027. The South Korean brand is accelerating development to better compete with rising Chinese SUVs like the Omoda 5.
Prototype Testing Shows Bold New Design
After nearly four years since the current KONA’s second generation launch, Hyundai surprised observers by revealing prototypes of the third generation during European test runs. These spy shots show a SUV with a tougher, more aggressive look. The KONA’s new design features a taller hood and a more vertical front end, with standout headlights and grille that give it a distinct road presence.
This updated style echoes the Hyundai Crater Concept introduced about a year ago, hinting at strong visual changes that go beyond a typical mid-cycle refresh. Hyundai plans this fresh look to help the KONA stand out against the growing range of attractive Chinese offerings.
Advanced Tech and New Engines
The inside of the new KONA is expected to be more digital, adopting Hyundai’s latest PLEOS infotainment system. This will include a fully digital instrument cluster paired with a large touchscreen, enhancing connectivity and user experience.
Mechanically, the KONA will continue with gasoline, self-charging hybrid (HEV), and electric variants, but with important updates. The hybrid version will use a new 1.6-liter gasoline engine shared with the upcoming KIA Seltos, producing between 160 and 180 horsepower depending on whether it uses front-wheel drive or electric all-wheel drive.
The electric KONA will see improvements in battery and motor efficiency, aimed at boosting driving range, though exact figures have yet to be confirmed.
Launch Timeline
Given the progress in testing and leaked design details, Hyundai might unveil the new KONA by the end of this year. However, buyers will need to wait until 2027 for the model to arrive at dealerships.
