Xiaomi has started taking preorders for its first electric range-extended SUVs under the new SkyNomad sub-brand. The lineup includes two models, the smaller SkyNomad N70 Max and the larger N90 Max, both equipped with range-extender technology. Prices begin at around $38,410 for the N70 Max and $44,320 for the N90 Max, aiming to offer luxury features at a competitive price point in China.
New SkyNomad Brand Focuses on Flexible SUVs with Range Extenders
Instead of releasing these SUVs under Xiaomi’s main brand, the company launched SkyNomad to separate its electric vehicle lineup from its extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). The SkyNomad models are built on the Kunlun EREV platform, designed to combine SUV capability with adjustable, MPV-style seating arrangements suited for various passenger needs.
Both SUVs feature a flat floor stretching 2.90 meters with a slight 2.95-degree angle. The interior offers a unique 2+2+3 seating layout, with the second and third rows capable of sliding forward and backward to maximize cabin flexibility. This approach highlights the brand’s focus on adaptable space rather than traditional fixed interior designs.
Range Extender Engine Details and Efficiency
Powering the range extender is a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine delivering up to 112 kW. The petrol engine supports multiple fuel grades, including 92-, 95-, and 98-octane gasoline, and achieves an impressively low fuel consumption rate of 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres (about 41 mpg). Xiaomi also emphasizes long maintenance intervals for the engine, with services required every three years or 30,000 kilometres, aiming to match typical EV maintenance standards.
Pricing and Market Comparison
The SkyNomad N70 Max starts at 259,900 yuan (roughly $38,410), while the larger N90 Max is priced at 299,900 yuan (around $44,320). These prices position Xiaomi competitively against other EVs and EREVs in China. For instance, the Tesla Model Y Long Range, similar in size to the N70 Max, retails at about 339,000 yuan ($50,100), making the SkyNomad models notably more affordable.
The SkyNomad N70 Max’s closest competitor appears to be the recently launched Li Auto Li L6, priced slightly lower at 249,800 yuan ($36,900). Xiaomi’s entry into the range-extended SUV segment offers buyers an appealing alternative with flexible interiors and extended driving range.
More details about the lower trims and availability are expected as Xiaomi moves closer to production and delivery of the SkyNomad models.
