Mazda Plans Electric-Ready Next-Gen MX-5 with Lightweight Design

Mazda’s next-generation MX-5 Miata is set to maintain its traditional petrol roots initially but will be designed to switch to electric power in the future. Mazda’s CEO Masahiro Moro confirmed that the upcoming model will be prepared for a “scenario without a combustion engine.”

Electric Future Built into the Design

While details about the exact powertrains have not been announced, Moro’s comments suggest Mazda will launch the next MX-5 with a petrol engine but with a platform that can accommodate electrification later on. This approach aligns with a 2025 patent hinting at battery placement in the transmission tunnel of an MX-5, possibly to house electric components without changing the car’s overall design significantly.

The prototype layout may allow Mazda to keep the car’s classic proportions and handling characteristics, which could be an advantage compared to EV sports cars using large skateboard battery packs under the floor.

Weight and Balance Remain Key Priorities

Mazda aims to keep the new MX-5’s weight between 1,000 and 1,200 kilograms (about 2,200 to 2,645 pounds), similar to the current model. Moro stressed that they want to achieve this without relying on expensive materials like carbon fiber. Achieving that weight with electrification is a major challenge since batteries usually add weight.

Interestingly, Mazda’s battery layout might resemble Maserati’s electric GranTurismo Folgore, which uses a T-shaped battery pack mainly located in the transmission tunnel and near the front bulkhead. This setup preserves traditional weight distribution and allows for a lower seating position, important for a sports car like the Miata.

What’s Next for the Miata?

There is no confirmed launch date for the electric or electrification-ready MX-5, but Mazda’s cautious approach suggests the petrol version will arrive first. Electrification will likely follow once the technology and market demand are ready.

For fans of the Miata, the challenge will be whether Mazda can combine the instant torque of an electric powertrain with the lightweight feel that made the MX-5 famous. If successful, Mazda could offer a sports car that blends classic driving pleasure with modern electric performance.
