The next BMW M5 Sedan is showing clear signs of a major update in recent spy photos. The 2028 model moves towards BMW’s modern “Neue Klasse” design language, especially noticeable in its redesigned headlights and front grille.
Sharper, More Detailed Headlights Stand Out
Spy images reveal advanced new headlights that are slimmer and more intricate than before. The lights feature multiple LED sections, with some illuminated bars on the top and others inactive below. This design diverges from the bulkier style seen on earlier prototypes and hints at a sophisticated lighting setup, possibly including M-specific yellow lighting.
New Front Grille and Aggressive Bumper
The front grille adopts a wider, flatter oval shape, breaking from the traditional kidney grille look BMW used in recent years. This change bridges the gap between futuristic design and a nod to past styles. Complementing the grille, the bumper is busy with large openings and vents designed to support the car’s powerful engine and sporty character.
Sporty Details and Mechanical Updates
The prototype also shows a strong brake system with drilled discs at both front and rear, and red-painted calipers, possibly an optional feature. A slim carbon spoiler sits subtly on the rear edge of the trunk lid. The taillights bear a familiar layout, similar to those expected on the upcoming BMW 3 Series, but the rear end remains largely under wraps.
Powertrain and Interior Upgrades
Inside, the 2028 M5 is expected to feature a new panoramic, customizable digital cockpit controlled by a large 17.9-inch touchscreen in the center console. Front passengers might get an extra touchscreen as an optional upgrade, like in the latest BMW X5.
The powertrain will continue the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) path, combining a refreshed 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor. Together, they deliver around 727 horsepower, working through BMW’s M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and an 8-speed automatic transmission. This setup aims to raise driving dynamics while maintaining comfort, thanks to a new chassis control system replacing the current adaptive suspension.
Expected Launch Timeline
BMW is still rigorously testing the M5 prototype, focussing on system integration and hybrid performance. The 2028 M5 Sedan is scheduled for a spring 2027 debut, with sales likely to begin in October as a 2028 model.
