Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series Returns to Australia with Updated Emissions System

After nearly a year of paused orders, Toyota’s Land Cruiser 70 Series is back on the Australian market. The familiar off-road icon has received an important update to meet stricter emissions standards while keeping its well-known powertrain intact.

Updated Emissions to Meet Euro 6d Standards

The key change to the Land Cruiser 70 Series is a modified emissions system for the 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine. To comply with Australia’s Euro 6d emission rules, a 20-liter AdBlue tank has been added. This system injects urea into the exhaust to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.

  • AdBlue filler for dual-cab chassis models is located on the left front fender
  • Single-cab chassis models have the filler between the cabin and the rear wheels

Power and Transmission Remain Consistent

The updated 70 Series keeps the same engine output as before. It produces 150 kW of power between 3000 and 3400 rpm, and peak torque of 500 Nm from 1600 to 2800 rpm.

Currently, only the six-speed automatic transmission version is available in Australia. Toyota has temporarily paused orders for models equipped with the five-speed manual gearbox. The manual variants, such as the 78 and 79 dual-cab chassis and 76 GXL, might return later but no specific date has been given.

Other Notable Adjustments

  • The 78 Series Troopcarrier now has a reduced fuel tank capacity, down from 180 liters to 130 liters, aligning it with other 70 Series models
  • Toyota Australia paused some orders in early 2025 to manage customer expectations and vehicle supply
  • Current 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel engine replaces the previous 4.5-liter V8, phased out mid-2024

Why It Matters

The Land Cruiser 70 Series holds a strong following in Australia for its ruggedness and reliability. This update allows it to continue meeting modern emission regulations without sacrificing performance. While manual transmission fans will need to wait, the resumption of orders signals Toyota’s commitment to keeping this classic off-roader available to enthusiasts and work users alike.
