Hyundai Tucson 2027 Drops Diesel, Makes AWD Hybrid-Only

The fifth-generation Hyundai Tucson aims to be more advanced and larger but comes with notable changes. Most prominently, diesel engines are gone, and all-wheel drive (AWD) is now reserved for hybrid versions only. This shift means buyers wanting AWD must choose more expensive hybrid models.

The End of Diesel and Simplified Gasoline Options

For its new Tucson, Hyundai has removed the diesel engine from the European lineup. The familiar 1.6 CRDi diesel with 136 horsepower and mild hybrid tech won’t be offered anymore. The gasoline range has also narrowed. Only the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with 150 horsepower remains, still available with manual or dual-clutch automatic transmissions and a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The previous 180 horsepower gasoline version is discontinued.

All-Wheel Drive Is Now Hybrid-Exclusive

One significant change is that AWD is no longer available with conventional petrol engines. Instead, AWD comes only on hybrid powertrains. Hyundai plans two hybrid setups: a regular hybrid with 245 horsepower and a plug-in hybrid offering 292 horsepower and an estimated electric-only range of up to 81 kilometers. Both hybrids are offered in front-wheel and all-wheel drive versions.

This means customers who want AWD must pay more, as hybrids generally cost more than regular petrol or diesel models. The previous Tucson allowed cheaper AWD options with either the 180 hp gasoline or the diesel engine. Now, entry-level AWD is tied to higher-priced hybrids, possibly pushing up starting prices for AWD versions in Europe.

Larger Size and Premium Feel Alongside Increased Costs

The new Tucson has grown beyond 4.5 meters in length, moving away from its earlier compact dimensions. It offers more technology inside, including a sophisticated infotainment system called Pleos, pushing the cabin toward a more premium segment feel.

Hyundai targets a towing capacity of up to 1,910 kilograms, depending on the engine, though exact details on which versions support this weight haven’t been confirmed yet. This capacity is important for buyers needing to tow trailers or caravans.

Launch Timing and Market Outlook

Official sales are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027. At that time, Hyundai will reveal pricing details. Given the hybrid-only AWD setup, the least expensive Tucson with AWD is likely to cost more than current AWD trims.

By removing diesel and limiting AWD to hybrids, Hyundai simplifies its lineup but also narrows options for customers wanting a basic AWD without hybrid technology. This move fits the brand’s focus on electrification but could affect buyers looking for more affordable four-wheel-drive setups without batteries.
