Genesis GV70 EREV Spied Ahead of Launch with Targeted 900 km Range

Genesis is preparing a new extended-range electric version of the GV70 SUV, aiming for an impressive 900 kilometers of total driving range. Spy photos of a nearly uncovered test mule reveal key details about this upcoming model, which could arrive in Europe and other markets by late 2026.

Spy Photos Reveal Key Features and Design Clues

The prototype caught in the latest spy shots uses the body of the current GV70 rather than the upcoming redesigned version. This mule shows visible changes that hint at its extended-range hybrid powertrain. A new fuel filler cap has appeared on the left rear quarter panel, with the gasoline tank inlet opposite it, which is unusual compared to purely electric models.

Unlike the current all-electric GV70, which places the charging port near the front grille with a closed-off design, this version has an open grille and no visible charging port, suggesting the EV charging location has shifted. Most notably, a dual exhaust system with two visible exhaust pipes is integrated below the rear bumper, confirming the presence of an internal combustion engine.

What Is an EREV and Why Genesis Chooses It

The GV70 EREV (extended-range electric vehicle) uses a small gasoline engine to generate electricity and extend the driving range beyond what the battery alone can provide. This system allows the car to operate mainly as an electric vehicle while using fuel for longer trips without relying entirely on charging stations.

This makes the model distinct from plug-in hybrids and fully electric cars. Genesis is reportedly targeting a total range close to 900 kilometers, which would offer a significant advantage in the luxury SUV segment, especially in markets where charging infrastructure is still limited or longer trips are common.

Expected Markets and Launch Timeline

Genesis plans to bring the GV70 EREV to several parts of the world, including North America, South Korea, and selected European countries such as Spain. The model could complement the existing GV70 lineup by offering an alternative for customers who want electric driving benefits but need greater range flexibility.

The current timeline suggests the GV70 EREV will debut around the end of 2026. More details about its powertrain, battery size, and official range figures are still awaited.

Development Stage and Future Prospects

The mule seen testing uses the current GV70 body, not the refreshed design set to launch soon, which features new LED daytime running lights and a redesigned grille with a geometric pattern. This suggests the extended-range variant may arrive shortly after the updated GV70 debuts.

Genesis’s move to offer an EREV version highlights a broader strategy to address range anxiety concerns in premium segments. By offering a near-electric driving experience with the safety net of a gasoline generator, Genesis hopes to attract buyers hesitant about fully electric vehicles.

As Genesis moves closer to its European expansion, the GV70 EREV could play a key role in building the brand’s presence with a distinctive blend of electric technology and long-distance capability.
