At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa confirmed the company’s move away from developing diesel engines for passenger cars. While the automaker will keep its wide range of brands intact, it is shifting its focus toward electric and hybrid technologies.
Diesel Engines Phased Out for Passenger Cars
Filosa openly stated that passenger car diesels are losing priority within Stellantis. The company plans to reduce investments in compression-ignition engines for everyday vehicles. Instead, it is concentrating on plug-in hybrids, all-electric models, and “range-extender” systems combining batteries with small combustion engines. However, the exact timing for the new powertrains’ arrival remains unannounced.
Diesels will have a longer life in commercial vehicles. Filosa explained that electric vans remain relatively expensive to run compared to diesel versions, keeping diesel viable in this segment for the near future.

Brand Strategy and Quality Focus
Despite the technological shift, Stellantis maintains its broad brand lineup, including Opel and Vauxhall, to serve specific regional markets. Filosa described this as a deliberate strategy to preserve strong local identities while sharing underlying components across brands to save costs.
To improve customer satisfaction, the company has devoted over 2,000 engineers to enhancing build quality and extending warranties.
Affordable Electric Cars on the Horizon
Stellantis is aiming to bring electric vehicles to a wider audience with an upcoming electric Citroën 2CV. Set for production in late 2027, the compact EV aims for an accessible price of around €15,000. It will use a flexible modular platform that could support other budget-friendly models in the group.
While the plan sounds promising, it is still uncertain if Stellantis can hit such an aggressive price without sacrificing too much on features or range. Filosa also highlighted futuristic elements like steer-by-wire systems and Alfa Romeo’s Cuorerosso concept to showcase the company’s technological ambitions.
