Volkswagen Renames and Refreshes ID.4 Electric SUV as ID. Tiguan for 2027 Launch

Volkswagen is preparing a mid-cycle update for its ID.4 electric SUV, renaming it the ID. Tiguan starting in 2027. This change brings VW’s most popular SUV nameplate into its electric lineup while introducing several design and interior updates.

New Name and Design Changes Highlight the Facelift

The ID.4 will lose its numeric badge in favor of the ID. Tiguan name, aligning with Volkswagen’s strategy to use familiar names for its electric models. However, the new ID. Tiguan remains a fully electric, MEB-platform vehicle, different from the conventional Tiguan that uses a separate MQB platform. Both models will coexist for now, with no immediate plans to merge into a single electric offering.

Spy photos of camouflaged prototypes reveal significant changes at the front and rear. The ID. Tiguan features redesigned headlights and taillights, giving the SUV a slightly boxier look. This fresh design approach resembles the updates seen on the ID. Polo and ID.3 Neo. Despite these changes, the familiar rounded profile remains largely unchanged.

Interior Updates Bring More Physical Controls and Larger Screens

Inside, the facelift brings a bigger driver display and more traditional controls. The previously used touch sliders have been replaced by physical buttons below the central touchscreen, aiming to improve usability. Additional upgrades include conventional steering-wheel buttons, separate window switches for each door, and likely a volume knob between the front seats.

These changes echo tweaks made to the ID.3 Neo earlier this year, showing VW’s move to reintroduce some physical controls after earlier models favored touch-sensitive surfaces.

Launch Plans and Market Positioning

The ID. Tiguan is expected to debut in early October, with sales starting in Europe at the beginning of 2027. The SUV will reach the U.S. market later, replacing the outgoing ID.4. Volkswagen has not yet revealed the exact North American launch schedule or detailed specifications for that market.

Meanwhile, the coupe-style ID.5 is reportedly being discontinued, leaving the ID. Tiguan to cover the electric SUV lineup more broadly.

This facelift focuses on subtle but meaningful improvements rather than a full redesign. The updated ID. Tiguan should feel more familiar and user-friendly, helping it compete in the growing electric crossover segment.
