BMW to Unveil Eighth-Generation 3 Series This Week with New Design and Powertrain Updates

BMW is set to reveal the all-new eighth-generation 3 Series sedan, known internally as the G50, later this week. This update brings significant changes in styling and interior design, as well as an updated engine lineup that continues to balance traditional powertrains with electrified options.

Sharp Exterior and i3-Inspired Interior

The redesigned 3 Series adopts bold exterior styling that marks a clear departure from the current model. Inside, the cabin draws heavily from the BMW i3 electric car, featuring a minimalist layout dominated by large digital screens and fewer physical buttons. Despite the similar interior look, the new 3 Series remains on BMW’s well-established CLAR architecture for combustion models, unlike the i3 and electric iX3, which use the new Neue Klasse platform.

This difference in platforms means the 3 Series will still have a central tunnel for its drivetrain, likely making rear-seat space less roomy compared to the flat-floor i3.

New Top Model: M350 xDrive Ahead of Next M3

While the upcoming full M3 is expected later this decade, BMW will introduce the M350 xDrive as the performance leader for now. This model replaces the current M340i xDrive with a more powerful inline-six engine. Initially, the M350 xDrive will offer all-wheel drive only, but BMW plans to enable a rear-wheel-drive mode through an over-the-air update scheduled for 2027.

Notably, this generation will not include a six-cylinder diesel option, and the previously available M340d diesel is discontinued. Lower trims will continue to offer four-cylinder gasoline engines and plug-in hybrid variants, although diesel’s future looks limited. A manual transmission also appears unlikely, even for the upcoming M3.

Production Shift and Sustainability Efforts

One of the most notable changes is the production location; BMW will build the new 3 Series in Dingolfing rather than its traditional Munich plant. Additionally, BMW has confirmed that about 25% of the vehicle’s materials will come from recycled sources, highlighting a step toward sustainability in their manufacturing process.

The new 3 Series is expected to maintain the model’s reputation for engaging driving dynamics while embracing modern technology and updated powertrain options. BMW seems to be targeting buyers with diverse needs, from those seeking internal combustion engines to those interested in electrified drivetrains.

The global debut is scheduled for the evening of September 29 (U.S. time) and early morning on September 30 in Europe, signaling the start of a new chapter for this iconic sports sedan.
