BMW is pushing forward with its second-generation X7 SUV, putting a sportier M60 variant through its paces at Nürburgring. This high-performance prototype features a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 and is expected to produce over 600 horsepower, turning the already large SUV into a more serious contender in its segment. The new X7 is planned to launch as a 2028 model in the second half of 2027.
Prototype Shows Unique Design and Powerful M60 Version
The BMW X7 prototype recently spotted at the Nürburgring race track reveals some fresh details. Unlike previous sightings, this test vehicle sports temporary headlights and taillights rather than production-ready units. The large SUV remains unmistakably big, stretching over five metres in length with a wheelbase exceeding three metres.
BMW’s flagship SUV will continue to compete with rivals like the newly introduced Audi Q9. The new X7 appears set to maintain a distinctive and less futuristic look compared to BMW’s “Neue Klasse” electric models, drawing design cues from the updated BMW 7 Series. However, its interior is expected to borrow advanced technology from the Neue Klasse lineup, including a large panoramic digital instrument cluster and a 17.9-inch central touchscreen.
M60 Variant to Focus on Performance Without a Full M Model
The most eye-catching detail on the Nürburgring prototype is its quad exhaust setup, a clear sign of BMW’s top-tier M60 trim. This version is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, similar to the M Performance engines used in other models today. It promises output north of 600 horsepower, adding muscle to the sizable three-row SUV.
As with previous generations, BMW will skip a full M version for the X7, opting instead to feature a high-performance ALPINA variant alongside the M60. The regular model range is expected to start with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine in the entry-level 40 xDrive version, with larger V8 engines reserved for higher trims.
Electric and Gasoline Versions to Share the Lineup
Besides gasoline models, BMW plans to introduce a fully electric iX7 variant, which has already been seen undergoing tests. The new X7’s development is nearing completion, though BMW will still put it through winter testing to ensure durability. A global unveiling is scheduled for late spring 2027, ahead of the SUV’s market debut later that year.
