BMW recently launched the fifth-generation X5, known internally as the G65, which introduces the brand’s Neue Klasse design ethos more fully inside and out. The X5 also marks BMW’s first with an all-electric version, the iX5, and offers five different powertrain options, including gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, electric, and hydrogen fuel cell. However, some fans have been critical of the new styling direction. Now, a digital artist has created a fresh take on the X5’s design, proposing changes to both the exterior and interior.
An Alternate Exterior with a Squarer Grille
The virtual designer Nikita Chuicko, known as “kelsonik” online, reimagined the BMW X5 with a more traditional look. Unlike the production model’s tall, slim kidney grille, the CGI version features a squarer, more solid grille. The headlights have been redone to remove the signature dual “X” LED shapes, offering a simpler design. The front bumper is slightly modified to suit these adjustments. On the side, the concept replaces the new-model’s tiny door handles with more conventional ones. Interestingly, the rear view remains untouched in this alternate vision.
Interior Simplifications for Familiarity
Inside, the CGI artist opted for a less futuristic feel. The unusual steering wheel from the production X5 is replaced by a classic three-spoke design. Instead of the production model’s dual screens for driver and passenger, this version shows only a single central screen. It also swaps the large, pillar-to-pillar digital instrument cluster for a smaller, traditional gauge behind the steering wheel.
BMW’s Neue Klasse and Market Reception
BMW’s Neue Klasse strategy began with the iX3 electric SUV last year and the new i3 sedan this year. The updated 7 Series and i7 also adopt some Neue Klasse elements, though less so externally. The G65 X5 remains on the older CLAR platform but integrates many Neue Klasse features. Its electric iX5 variant leads with a large 141–144 kWh battery and advanced 800-volt fast charging.
While the Neue Klasse models have enjoyed early sales success, some enthusiasts have found the styling divisive, especially with the X5. This digital redesign highlights an alternative that might please those preferring more classic BMW design cues. Whether BMW’s actual X5 and its long-wheelbase G78 sibling will match the sales and appeal of the Neue Klasse iX3 and i3 remains to be seen.
