KIA has started testing the sixth generation of its popular Sportage SUV in Europe. The new model, expected for launch in 2028, will bring significant changes in design and powertrain, moving away from pure petrol engines.
Design Updates Seen in Early European Prototypes
Spy photos show a heavily camouflaged prototype of the Sportage on German roads. While the SUV’s current fifth generation was introduced in 2021 and refreshed in late 2024, KIA is already advancing the next major update. The new Sportage is expected to adopt KIA’s latest design language, featuring a completely revised front end. Early images suggest the headlights will be arranged vertically, a departure from the previous model’s setup.
The interior, glimpsed through the prototype’s windows, appears to be getting a technology upgrade. It will use Hyundai Motor Group’s Pleos system, which aims to improve digital connectivity and user interface.
Powertrain Shift Focuses on Hybrid Options
One of the most notable changes will be the end of purely gasoline-powered engines in key markets like Europe. The current 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol engine without hybrid assistance is set to be dropped. Instead, KIA will offer versions with mild hybrid (MHEV), self-charging hybrid (HEV), and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) systems.
The future of diesel engines in the Sportage remains uncertain. Currently, the model uses a 1.6-liter turbo diesel with mild hybrid technology, which might continue at least in the early phase of the new generation. The hybrids, particularly the PHEV, are expected to improve in both efficiency and electric range. Reports indicate the PHEV could offer over 100 kilometers of electric-only driving.
Launch Timeline and Market Outlook
The sixth-generation KIA Sportage is rumored to debut in South Korea in the second half of 2027. European customers should see it arrive shortly after as a 2028 model. This update will play a key role for KIA, especially considering the global sales of over seven million Sportage units so far.
