The Volkswagen Group faced mixed results in the first half of 2026, with global deliveries falling 6.3 percent. While sales declined significantly in China and the US, Europe showed solid growth, especially in battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). Skoda’s Elroq emerged as the top-selling BEV in the group during this period.
Global Sales Decline Amid Regional Differences
Volkswagen Group delivered 4.13 million vehicles worldwide from January to June 2026, down from 4.41 million in the same period last year. Battery-electric vehicles made up 10.6 percent of global sales, while plug-in hybrids and extended-range EVs rose by 27 percent, supporting the transition to full electric.
Markets in the Asia-Pacific region struggled most, particularly China, where overall deliveries dropped 25.9 percent. The group’s BEV sales in China fell sharply by almost 48 percent, a reflection of the broader downturn in the local market. A slight recovery in the second quarter was helped by the SAIC-VW ID. ERA 9X extended-range SUV.
North America also saw a notable decline, with Volkswagen Group’s BEV sales plummeting nearly 69 percent to just 9,800 units. This poses a challenge for growth in the US where competition and market conditions remain tough.

Europe Drives Growth and BEV Sales
Europe was the bright spot for Volkswagen Group. Vehicle deliveries in the region rose 3.5 percent to just over 2 million units. Battery-electric vehicle sales in Europe increased 8.4 percent to 377,000 units, giving the group a 21 percent share of the Western European BEV market.

Skoda Elroq Outpaces Volkswagen BEVs
While the core Volkswagen brand saw a 10.9 percent drop in global sales and a 28.2 percent decline in EV sales, Skoda gained momentum. The Czech brand delivered 555,700 vehicles in H1 2026, supported by a 48.3 percent surge in BEV sales.
The Skoda Elroq led the group’s BEV lineup, with 59,900 units sold, outperforming Volkswagen’s ID.4 and ID.5 models, which posted combined sales of 53,700 units.

Other Brands Also Face Challenges
Premium and luxury divisions experienced declines as well:

- Audi deliveries fell 7.2 percent
- Porsche dropped 16.5 percent
- Bentley slipped 13.6 percent
- Lamborghini sales decreased by 4.6 percent
Why It Matters
The Volkswagen Group’s H1 2026 results highlight a shifting global market. Declines in China and the US underscore ongoing challenges in key regions, while strong European demand and Skoda’s BEV success provide a glimpse of growth opportunities. How the group balances these markets will shape its future electric vehicle strategy.
